Translation of diplomas, supplements and education documents
At a foreign university, recognition centre or employer, a diploma answers three questions: what qualification, from which institution and with what results. The translation must answer all three exactly as the original does, without "upgrading" the degree or "converting" the grades, or the recognition application comes back. We translate diplomas, supplements, school-leaving certificates and other certificates in the form recognition centres accept without hesitation.

Degree as in the originalThe qualification title with the original in brackets

In short: diploma translation for recognition abroad
- A diploma without its supplement is rarely enough, because it is the supplement that shows subjects, credits and grades.
- The degree title is rendered in the translation as in the original; its equivalence is determined by the recognition body of the receiving country.
- Grades are not converted into another system in the translation; the translator only adds an explanation of the Georgian grading scale.
- ECTS credits and hours are carried over from the supplement as figures, unchanged, because they are used to assess the size of the programme.
- A doctor's or nurse's diploma for work abroad usually comes with the curriculum and documents confirming clinical training and work experience.
- A translation does not mean recognition: the decision is made by the receiving country's recognition centre, the university or the professional regulator.
Why recognition centres send diploma translations back
A recognition centre compares the translation with the original, not with your future career. Every well-meant "refinement" by the translator is, to the centre, a discrepancy.
-
A degree title is not an equivalent
"Bachelor" and "Specialist" are not translated as "Bachelor of Science" or "Master" just because that sounds better. The qualification is translated as in the original, the original title stays in brackets, and only the recognition body determines equivalence.
-
A grading system needs explaining, not converting
100-point, 5-point, "passed", "excellent": every system is carried over exactly as it is, with a translator's note on the original scale. To a recognition centre, a grade "converted" by the translator is an alteration of the document.
-
Subjects and credits
"Higher Mathematics" and "Mathematical Analysis" are different subjects, and the hours and credits columns are where the centre calculates the size of the programme. We translate subject names with standard academic terminology and leave the figures unchanged.
-
The institution's official name
A university has an official name in other languages, the one listed in accreditation registers. Any other version makes the institution harder to find. We use the official form and, if the name has changed, both.
Which package each recipient needs
| Recipient | What it usually asks for | Package |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign university, admission | Diploma and supplement or school-leaving certificate, sometimes proof of student status | Apostille, translation, notary; often a sealed envelope |
| Recognition centre (nostrification) | Diploma, full supplement, sometimes the curriculum with hours | Apostille on the original, translation including the apostille, notary |
| Employer, licensing body | Diploma, professional certificates, proof of work experience | Translation, notary; apostille for regulated professions |
| School, nursery (enrolling a child) | Grade sheet, letter from the school, vaccination certificate | Translation with the bureau's stamp or notarised, as the school requires |
| Embassy (student visa) | Letter of acceptance, diploma or school-leaving certificate, financial documents | Translation, notary, often an apostille |
A diploma is priced as one document, a supplement by the page; translation takes 1-2 working days, and the apostille adds the National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement's processing time, usually 10 working days. The apostille and legalisation rules are on the legalisation page, and financial documents for a student visa are on a separate page.
A doctor's or nurse's diploma abroad: what recognition of a medical profession requires
Medicine is a regulated profession almost everywhere, so a translated diploma alone is not enough for a doctor or nurse to work abroad. The regulator examines the content of your studies, your clinical experience and your professional standing, and each needs its own document.
-
Diploma and full supplement
Every semester, every subject, credits and grades. A medical faculty's supplement often runs to several pages, and every line of it is translated, electives included.
-
Curriculum with hours
Some regulators compare not only subjects but also the hours of lectures, practical classes and clinical rotations. The university issues this curriculum, and we translate the table so that every total matches the original.
-
Residency and specialty certificate
A residency completion letter and a specialty certificate show that you completed professional training after your degree. We translate the specialty title as in the original and do not slot it into the receiving country's list of specialties on our own initiative.
-
Proof of experience and standing
An employer's letter stating position, department and period, and a document confirming that your right to practise has never been suspended or restricted (certificate of good standing). The latter is issued by the competent Georgian authority.
Terminology examples: diploma and supplement fields in English and German
Below are the fields found most often in Georgian diplomas and supplements, with the translation rule that recognition centres read without hesitation.
| Georgian term | English | German | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| ბაკალავრის აკადემიური ხარისხი | Bachelor's academic degree | akademischer Bachelorgrad | We translate the full qualification title as in the original and keep the Georgian form in brackets |
| კრედიტი (ECTS) | credit (ECTS) | Leistungspunkt (ECTS) | The figure is carried over unchanged; in the Georgian system one credit usually equals 25 hours of study workload |
| სავალდებულო და არჩევითი კურსი | compulsory course, elective course | Pflichtmodul, Wahlmodul | We keep the course status, because the centre counts the compulsory core of the programme separately |
| ფრიადი (A, 91-100) | excellent (A, 91-100) | ausgezeichnet (A, 91-100) | The verbal grade is translated, the letter and score stay unchanged; we do not convert it into a German grade |
| ჩაითვალა | pass | bestanden | This is a grade without a score and must stay that way, so that no error creeps in when the grade average is calculated |
| სრული ზოგადი განათლების ატესტატი | Certificate of Complete General Education | Zeugnis über die vollständige allgemeine Bildung | We translate it neither as High School Diploma nor as Abitur, because that would already be a determination of equivalence |
At the end of the supplement translation we add a short translator's note on the Georgian grading system: A (91-100), B (81-90), C (71-80), D (61-70) and E (51-60) are passing grades, while FX (41-50) and F (40 and below) are failing grades. You can estimate the cost of the supplement by page with the translation price calculator, and before taking the diploma to the Public Service Hall, check whether an apostille or legalisation is needed for the country of your university or employer.
Frequently asked questions about education document translation
Do you convert grades into a foreign system, such as ECTS grades or a GPA?
No, and no serious recognition centre expects a translator to do so. Converting grades is the job of the assessing body, and a grade converted by the translator makes the document unreliable. We keep the grades exactly as they appear in the supplement and add a note to the translation on the original grading system: for example, that grades are on a 100-point scale with 51 as the pass mark, or on a 5-point scale where 5 is the highest. If the supplement already explains the scale, we translate that explanation as it is and add nothing.
Should the apostille go on the diploma before or after translation?
Before, almost always. Foreign universities and recognition centres ask for an apostille on the original, which confirms that the Georgian diploma is genuine, and the translation must cover that apostille too. Educational documents are handed in at the Public Service Hall, but the apostille is issued by the National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement after it checks authenticity, usually within 10 working days, so we start this step first. A diploma from the Soviet period or from an institution that has since closed may need prior confirmation, which we clarify before you order.
The university wants the translation in a sealed envelope or sent directly. How does that work?
Some universities and evaluation services accept a translation only directly from the translation provider, so that the applicant cannot alter the document. In that case we place the notarised translation in an envelope sealed with the bureau's stamp, stamp and sign across the envelope and, as you choose, either hand it to you unopened or send it straight to the recipient by express post with a tracking number. For electronic submission we send the scan from the bureau's official email address, so that the source can be verified.
I am enrolling my child in a school abroad. Which documents need translating?
As a rule, the grade sheet or report card for the last school year, a letter from the school stating the class and period of study and, if the stage has been completed, the school-leaving certificate. Schools often ask for a vaccination certificate and birth certificate as well. We translate the grade sheet as a table, with the official subject names and a note on the grading system, so that the receiving school can place the child in the right class. Private schools are usually satisfied with the bureau's stamp; state schools and education authorities ask for a notarised translation, sometimes with an apostille.
Does a diploma translation mean recognition? Who decides what my diploma is equivalent to abroad?
No. A translation only ensures that the recipient can read the content of the Georgian document accurately. Equivalence is determined by the competent body of the receiving country: in Europe often the national centre of the ENIC-NARIC network, for further study the university itself, and for regulated professions the professional regulator. Where needed, the Georgian side confirms the document's authenticity, for example with an apostille or a letter from the competent education authority. We check which body is competent in your case against the recipient's official information and tell you before you order which documents it asks for.
My university issued the supplement in Georgian and English. Do I still need a translation?
For an English-speaking recipient, often not: an official bilingual supplement is a document issued by the university, and many universities and recognition centres accept it without translation, although it may still need an apostille. A translation is needed when the recipient works in another language, such as German or Italian, or when the diploma is in Georgian only. In that case we translate the subject names in line with the university's official English version, so that documents submitted in two languages do not contradict each other.
What goes with the diploma
- Passport and certificate translation Your name must read the same in the diploma and the passport; we translate both together.
- Vaccination certificate translation A standard requirement of schools and universities at enrolment.
- Apostille on a diploma Handing the document in at the Public Service Hall and collecting the apostille, on your behalf.
A diploma should arrive exactly as it was issued
